THE POSITION OF DIRECTOR OF CHURCHES UNITING IN CHRIST
The nine member-communions in the successor to the Consultation on
Church Union are seeking a seminary trained, ecumenically committed
person with skills in theology and ecumenism, administration,
coordination, diplomacy, speaking and writing.
JOB
DESCRIPTION
SCOPE
-
The
director is to be the primary staff of "Churches Uniting in
Christ" (CUIC) who will serve as the coordinator in helping the
CUIC churches discern their direction in this new relationship, both
as enabler to its growth and as an interpreter of its vision,
working along with the representatives of the churches.

The
immediate tasks include facilitating the work of setting up and
enabling leadership to the Coordinating Council and the three task
forces (ministry, racial justice, and local and regional networking)
of CUIC.

It
is expected that the Director will work closely with the
representatives, heads-of-communion, and ecumenical officers of the
CUIC churches in encouraging, advocating and prodding the communions
in their full participation in, and contribution to, this new
relationship.

This
position, like the proposed structures of CUIC, is seen to be
"provisional," that is, it will be evaluated and
(possibly) revised in 2007 at the time of the hoped-for full
recognition and reconciliation of ordained ministries between the
CUIC communions.

Additional
staff to CUIC will include a part-time administrative assistant.
Any additional staff will be considered at the recommendation
of the task forces and the Director, as work dictates and budget
allows.
ACCOUNTABILITY
The
Director is employed by and accountable to the Coordinating Council of
"Churches Uniting in Christ."
FUNCTIONS
It
is the Director's responsibility to see that the following functions are
provided for in the development of the new relationship of
"Churches Uniting in Christ":

Responsible
for enabling leadership to the work of the Coordinating Council and
the Task Forces of CUIC, including making arrangements for all
meetings of these bodies and enabling follow-through on tasks.

Responsible
for preparation and expenditure of the budget, in consultation with
and approval by the finance committee of the Coordinating Council.

Responsible
for overseeing and directing all other staff of CUIC, and for
administering the CUIC office.

Responsible
for initiating and nurturing relationships among leaders within the
CUIC communions in developing the CUIC relationship.
-
Responsible
for coordinating the work of the CUIC Coordinating Council, its task
forces, future Plenary sessions, etc., and providing communication
among these working units.

Responsible
for initiating and maintaining communication and enabling working
relationships with the heads-of-communion, ecumenical officers, and
other key personnel in the CUIC communions.

Responsible,
in consultation with the Coordinating Council, for seeking and
nurturing positive relationships with communions that are not
participating communions in CUIC, with the hope of expanding the
number of communions included in the relationship as "partners
in mission and dialogue."
QUALIFICATIONS

strong passion for Christian unity, and an understanding of the
unique nature of CUIC

of the catholicity of the one church of Jesus Christ

Commitment
to overcoming racism and promoting social justice as an essential
aspect of the church catholic

Demonstrated
administrative competency

Ability
to communicate and interpret the vision of CUIC in both speaking and
writing

Diplomatic
skill and ego-strength I working with denominational leaders

Theological
education (ordination is not required) and experience in ministry in
a church or ecumenical setting

Energy
to offer to the multi-faceted tasks involved in nurturing a venture
LOCATION
OF OFFICE
Flexible,
and to be determined by the Coordinating Council in conversation with
the person called as Director.
EVALUATION
The
work of the Director will be evaluated annually by a personnel committee
of the Coordinating Council which shall review the work performance,
help to establish annual goals, and recommend to the Coordinating
Council changes in total compensation.
SALARY
AND COMPENSATION
Beginning
salary range of $50,000 to $60,000 (depending upon previous experience),
with benefit package of full pension and health care. To be negotiated.
